Light Fixture Height Over Dining Room Table
Try adding shades to chandelier candelabra bulbs or a wall dimmer to help you control the light and set a more flattering mood. When a chandelier has no central downlight, you can enhance the dining room table setting and centerpiece by using recessed adjustable fixtures with narrow beam bulbs.
The light fixture should be hung 30-34 inches above the dining table. This same rule holds true for lighting over kitchen tables. For ceilings higher than 8 feet, add about three inches to the hanging height per foot. So if your ceiling is 10 feet tall, your lighting fixture should be hung 36-40 inches over the table.
The generally accepted rule for hanging dining room chandeliers is that the bottom of the fixture should hang between 30 and 36 inches above the top of the dining table. This range assumes you have an 8-foot ceiling. If the ceiling is higher, the recommended standard is to raise the chandelier 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height.
For example, if the dining room table was 48" wide x 60" long, the chandelier that is 24" to 36" in diameter would be an appropriate size to compliment the table. Use our calculator below to determine an ideal chandelier size based on your table dimensions and ceiling height.
